Weather patterns globally are estimated from a network of weather stations that record a host of information from max min temperature, humidity, rainfall, amount of sunshine, wind speed and direction and pressures – these all combine to allow meteorologists to develop maps of the various measurements and see how the develop over a number of days weeks, As computing power developed more refined models were developed to use these records to make estimates/predictions. with the increase and availability of satellite information these models have been further refined and we can track weather systems in real time
